MOTOR VEHICLE ACCIDENT WITH THE CHIEF OF NEW HAVEN POLICE DEPARTMENT

(11/23/2010) (NEW HAVEN)--At approximately 5:34 p.m. Monday evening Assistant Chief Ariel Melendez of the New Haven Police Department was involved in a motor vehicle accident on South Orange Street near Columbus Avenue in the Hill section of the city. Assistant Chief Melendez was leaving work and on his way home when he struck a pedestrian on South Orange Street, a short distance from the police department. The pedestrian, identified as 21-year-old Samuel Lewin of Old Saybrook parked his vehicle and began to cross the street when he was struck. Lewin was transported to an area hospital with head injuries where he was treated and released. The New Haven Police Department’s Accident Reconstruction team is handling the investigation. The Accident Reconstruction team was called to the scene to conduct the investigation. A thorough investigation into this accident is ongoing.
